Research discussions abound at Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference
There was a high standard of presentations at the Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference (YCSEC) held at our Oxfordshire headquarters last week. Early-career researchers and practitioners also took advantage of the conference being in-person to meet with colleagues to network and discuss research. Delegates attended from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Estonia and USA, and for some it was their first conference.
This year’s two-day programme included 19 presentations and 13 poster presentations, covering a range of topics, such as: morphodynamic processes; physical modelling; extreme wave statistics; tropical cyclone hazards; machine learning; and monitoring using novel remote sensing techniques.
Organised by a team from HR Wallingford, the conference also gave delegates the chance to see our extensive physical modelling facilities and world-leading ship simulators, which was of great interest to many of the delegates.
The conference concluded with the presentation of awards for the best presentation and poster. The best presentation was awarded to Umniya Al Khalili from Imperial College London and best poster to Maisy Bradbury from the University of Hull.
Attendees commented that they enjoyed being amongst possible future colleagues at a similar stage in their careers and hearing about their research topics, which instigated different ways to think about how they would approach their research.
